Mould & Core Coatings
Refractory coatings that protect mould and core surfaces from heat and improve surface finish.
Mould and core coatings are thin refractory layers applied to sand surfaces. They create a barrier between metal and sand, reducing burn-on, metal penetration and surface roughness, and lowering fettling cost.
Compositions are classified by the main refractory filler (zircon, alumina, graphite, silica) and carrier liquid (water or alcohol based). Water-based coatings are advantageous for environment and safety but need oven or forced drying. Alcohol-based coatings are dried quickly by ignition. The filler is chosen according to the metal poured and the section thickness.
Coating density (Baume) and application method (dipping, spraying, brushing) matter for quality. Zircon or alumina based coatings are common for heavy-section steel castings, and graphite or silica based coatings for grey iron.
