Ceramic Foam Filters
Ceramic filters in the gating system that retain slag and inclusions and calm metal flow.
Ceramic foam filters are porous ceramic elements placed in the gating system. They mechanically retain slag, oxides and other inclusions and make the flow laminar, reducing turbulence during mould filling. This lowers slag-related defects and surface imperfections.
Filter material is selected according to the metal poured: silicon carbide based filters for grey and ductile iron, zirconia based filters for steel and high-temperature alloys, and alumina based filters for aluminium and some copper alloys. Pore density is specified in ppi (pores per inch).
Correct placement requires the filter to seat fully in the runner, no metal bypass at the edges and, for grades requiring it, suitable preheating.
