Furan Resin & Hardener
Furan resin and acid hardener used for cold-set sand mould and core production.
Furan resin is a cold-setting (no-bake) mould and core binder that is mixed with sand and hardens at room temperature with a hardener. It is widely used for medium and large parts, single pieces and small series in cast iron, steel and non-ferrous casting.
The hardener (usually sulphonic acid based) reacts with the resin in the sand and sets the binder. Setting time depends on ambient temperature and hardener level. Resin addition is typically around 1 percent of sand weight; the hardener is set as a percentage of resin weight. Sand temperature, moisture and mixer quality affect the result.
Resin and hardener type are chosen according to the metal poured: low-nitrogen or nitrogen-free resins are preferred for steel because nitrogen can cause gas defects. Used sand can be reclaimed, which lowers binder consumption. Products should be stored in closed containers at room temperature, and personal protective equipment should be used.
