Feeder Sleeves (Exothermic / Insulating)
Exothermic and insulating sleeves that reduce feeder volume needed to compensate shrinkage.
Feeder sleeves surround the riser cavity in the mould and keep the metal inside molten longer, so that solidification shrinkage in the casting is fed from the riser. Using a smaller feeder raises metal yield and lowers fettling cost.
Insulating sleeves are made from low-conductivity fibres and fillers and slow heat loss. Exothermic sleeves contain a reactive mix (aluminium and an oxidiser) that generates heat on contact with metal, extending feeder time further. Exothermic types are common in steel casting; insulating or mildly exothermic types are mostly used in cast iron.
Size, shape (cylindrical, oval, domed) and modulus are chosen according to part geometry, metal type and gating. In ductile iron, sleeves are selected taking graphite expansion into account.
