Tin

Ingot tin for bronze casting alloys and pearlite stabilisation in grey iron.

Tin is a primary alloying element in copper alloys such as bronze and leaded bronze. It determines the strength and wear resistance of tin bronzes used in bearings, valve and pump bodies and some marine parts.

In grey cast iron it is added at very low levels (about 0.05-0.15 percent) as a pearlite stabiliser, ensuring a fully pearlitic matrix. Excess additions cause embrittlement, so the amount must be controlled strictly.

Because of its low melting point it is added at the final stages of alloying. Ingots should be stored dry and clean.
