Non-Ferrous Metals
Copper
Cathode copper that promotes pearlite in cast iron and forms the base of copper alloys.
Copper promotes a pearlitic matrix in cast iron and increases strength; in grey and ductile iron it is usually added at about 0.3-1.0 percent. It is the main component in producing brass, bronze and other copper alloys.
In ductile iron, high copper levels can interfere with graphite nodularisation, so the addition must be limited carefully. Cathode copper is preferred for copper alloy casting because of its purity and low gas content.
Molten copper dissolves high levels of hydrogen and oxygen, so deoxidation and degassing must be planned by the foundry.
