Silicon Metal

High-purity silicon used in aluminium casting alloys and special iron grades.

Silicon metal contains roughly 98.5 percent Si or more, with grades classified by Fe, Al and Ca content. Its most common foundry use is in making aluminium-silicon (Al-Si) casting alloys, where silicon improves fluidity and reduces shrinkage.

In cast iron, because it carries much less iron than ferrosilicon, it can be preferred for silicon adjustment in high-silicon special grades and heat-resistant irons. The Fe, Al and Ca limits determine the grade choice; in aluminium alloys, Fe and Ca affect mechanical properties and gas pickup tendency.

Dissolution time in aluminium melting is long, so fine grain sizes or master alloys are preferred.

Typical chemical analysis (%)

Silicon (Si) ≥ 98,5
Iron (Fe) ≤ 0,50
Aluminium (Al) ≤ 0,50
Calcium (Ca) ≤ 0,30

Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
