Non-Ferrous Metals
Nickel
Cathode and briquette nickel for austenitic cast iron, stainless and alloy steel castings.
Nickel is an alloying element that stabilises austenite and increases toughness in castings. It is used in austenitic cast irons (Ni-Resist types), stainless and alloy steel castings and some copper-base alloys. At low levels in cast iron it refines pearlite and increases hardenability.
It can be supplied as cathode (sheet) or briquettes. The addition varies by alloy class: in austenitic iron it is expressed in tens of percent, while in alloyed grey or ductile iron it is generally a few percent or less. Despite its high melting point, nickel dissolves easily in molten iron.
The surface of cathode nickel should be kept clean, and packaging containing moisture or oil should be avoided. The purity grade and residual elements should be checked on the analysis certificate.
