Ferroalloys

Ferrosilicon (FeSi 75)

High-silicon ferroalloy for silicon adjustment and deoxidation in cast iron and steel.

FeSi 75 contains about 75 percent silicon and is the most common silicon source in foundries. It is added to the melt for silicon adjustment in cast iron and for deoxidation and alloying in steel. It is also the base of inoculants and nodulariser pre-alloys.

Silicon recovery in induction furnaces is high; however, very fine grain sizes in the bath increase oxidation losses. For this reason coarse sizes such as 10-50 mm are generally preferred for furnace additions, while fine fractions are used in ladle and in-mould applications such as inoculation.

Aluminium and carbon levels are parameters to be controlled, particularly in ductile iron and low-carbon steel production. Ferrosilicon does not absorb moisture, but fine fractions generate dust and need care in packing and storage.

Typical chemical analysis (%)

Silicon (Si) 72-80
Aluminium (Al) ≤ 2,0
Carbon (C) ≤ 0,20
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0,04
Sulphur (S) ≤ 0,02

Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
