Ferroalloys

Ferrosilicon Magnesium (FeSiMg)

Magnesium master alloy that nodularises graphite in ductile iron.

FeSiMg is the master alloy used in magnesium treatment, converting graphite in molten cast iron from flake to spheroidal form. It is offered in several grades; roughly 5-9 percent Mg is the common range. Calcium and rare earth elements may be included to balance reaction intensity and the effect of trace elements.

It is usually applied in the ladle by sandwich, tundish or cover methods. Base sulphur should be low; at high sulphur, magnesium consumption rises and recovery falls. Treatment temperature, addition rate and ladle geometry determine magnesium recovery.

Inoculation follows the treatment, and the time to pouring is kept limited because of magnesium fading. The grain size should match the grade and addition method.

Typical chemical analysis (%)

Magnesium (Mg) 5,0-9,0
Silicon (Si) 40-48
Calcium (Ca) 1,0-3,0
Aluminium (Al) ≤ 1,0

Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
