Ferroalloys
Ferromanganese (HC FeMn)
High-carbon ferromanganese for manganese adjustment in steel and cast iron.
High-carbon ferromanganese (HC FeMn) contains roughly 70-80 percent manganese. It is used for manganese alloying and deoxidation in steel castings and for manganese adjustment in cast iron to promote pearlitic structure and strength. Manganese also binds sulphur as MnS.
Because of the high carbon content, its carbon contribution must be taken into account in low-carbon steel grades, where medium or low-carbon ferromanganese is preferred. Manganese recovery in furnace additions depends on bath temperature and addition timing.
Phosphorus can vary from lot to lot, so the analysis certificate should be checked for castings with phosphorus limits.
Typical chemical analysis (%)
| Manganese (Mn) | 70-80 |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 6,0-8,0 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 2,0 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0,40 |
| Sulphur (S) | ≤ 0,03 |
Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
