Pig Iron
Nodular (Ductile) Pig Iron
Pig iron with low Mn, P, S and trace elements for ductile iron production.
Nodular pig iron is a pig iron grade with controlled residual elements, used as the main part of the charge in ductile (spheroidal graphite) iron production. Low phosphorus, sulphur and manganese, together with limited trace elements such as Ti, Cr and V, help prevent interference with graphite nodularisation after magnesium treatment.
It is charged in induction and cupola furnaces together with steel scrap, returns and carburisers. In plants where scrap quality varies, increasing the share of nodular pig iron makes the melt chemistry more predictable. The ratio is set by the foundry according to scrap quality and the target grade.
It is advisable to check the analysis certificate of the specific lot before ordering. For ferritic ductile grades (for example EN-GJS-400 and 500 classes), the upper limits of Mn, P and trace elements can be critical.
Typical chemical analysis (%)
| Carbon (C) | 3,8-4,5 |
|---|---|
| Silicon (Si) | 0,5-1,5 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 0,05 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0,05 |
| Sulphur (S) | ≤ 0,03 |
Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
