Pig Iron

Hematite (Foundry) Pig Iron

Pig iron with balanced silicon and low phosphorus for grey iron and general foundry use.

Hematite pig iron is a foundry-grade pig iron with low phosphorus and sulphur, used as a charge component in grey, ductile and alloyed cast iron. Its silicon content is taken into account in charge calculations and contributes to graphite formation.

In charges with a high steel scrap share, it is used to balance carbon and silicon and bring the melt closer to target. In induction furnaces it can be used together with or instead of carburisers; the foundry sets the balance according to cost and target analysis.

For parts with phosphorus limits (for example pressure-tight castings and ductile iron), the P and S values of the lot should be checked.

Typical chemical analysis (%)

Carbon (C) 3,8-4,5
Silicon (Si) 1,5-3,0
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 1,0
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0,10
Sulphur (S) ≤ 0,05

Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
