Carburizer

Calcined petroleum coke and graphite carburisers for carbon adjustment in cast iron and steel.

Carburisers raise the carbon level of the melt to target, particularly in charges with a high steel scrap share. There are two main types: calcined petroleum coke based and graphite based (synthetic or electrode graphite). Graphite carburisers contain less sulphur and nitrogen and dissolve faster.

Sulphur and nitrogen levels matter for casting quality: high nitrogen can cause gas defects in steel and ductile iron castings, and high sulphur raises magnesium consumption during nodularisation. For ductile iron and thin-section castings, graphite carburisers with low S and N are preferred.

Grain size is selected according to the addition method. Coarse grains are added with the furnace charge, fine grains onto the molten bath or into the ladle. Recovery depends on temperature, stirring intensity and grain size.

Typical chemical analysis (%)

Fixed carbon (C) ≥ 98
Sulphur (S) ≤ 0,05
Ash ≤ 0,5
Moisture ≤ 0,5

Typical ranges. Exact values are given in the analysis certificate of each lot.
